A recent conversation with a candidate prompted me to write this in hopes of encouraging all candidates to look at opportunities through a big picture, long term lens. Having been in the recruiting industry for over 15 years, I have seen countless candidates who are solely focused on landing a job with a higher title and salary. While those are important factors to consider, I counsel my candidates to take a step back and consider their future goals when evaluating a potential opportunity. It may seem counterintuitive at first to make a lateral transition, but it can actually be a really smart move for several reasons.

Firstly, by taking on a role that allows for more growth and development than what you are currently experiencing, you are setting yourself up for future success. You gain new skills and experiences that you can leverage in future job opportunities that will provide vertical growth. This can also make you a more valuable candidate for potential employers, as you will have a wider range of experiences to draw from, which increases your future opportunities.

Secondly, taking a step back can also provide a much-needed break from the pressures and stress of your current role. It can give you the opportunity to reset and refocus, allowing you to come back stronger and more motivated.

Finally, taking a lateral or small step back can also provide an opportunity to work for a company that aligns better with your values and goals. Often, we become so focused on climbing the career ladder that we forget to consider if we are actually happy in our current role or if the company we work for aligns with our values. Taking a step back can give you the chance to evaluate these factors and find a better fit.

Of course, this isn’t always the best choice for everyone. It’s important to consider your individual situation and determine what makes the most sense for you. But in many cases, a move like this can provide valuable benefits in the long run and shouldn’t be automatically turned down.

I want everyone I work with to achieve their goals, which is why I continue to advocate for big picture thinking with everyone I recruit. Don’t just focus on the title and salary – think about the potential for growth, development, and alignment with your values. By taking this approach, you can set yourself up for success and find a role that truly fits both your personal and professional needs and goals.
